How to tell if your Septic System Needs Attention

Use your senses:

Toilet blurp or gurgle
Toilet bubbling or blooping

I started this post with a couple of videos showing a pretty clean toilet bowl with clear water, but incomplete flush. I decided to convert them to audio to save bandwidth because you can tell what you need to know by what you hear when you flush.

You know the sound of a normal toilet flush. There is an immediate rush of water and a drinking sound from the bowl as the entire contents are flushed down the drain. The audio samples are examples of funny toilet sounds when the septic tank is too full.

A few things to note about what you can hear:

  • There is no rush of water down the drain
  • the bowl fills up and rotation is sluggish instead of swirling
  • There is a blurp or gurgling sound as air is pushed back into the bowl
  • “That’s not good” , well that comment is self explanatory
  • More bubbling / blooping air noises and sound varieties are possible.

What to do next:

Its time to contact a Local Septic Pro for an appointment to come and empty the septic tank and check out the system. Use the Change Location link in the header of this page to start your search for local septic system service professionals in the Septic Pumping category, or just click here to search for Septic Pros in your area.

Toilet Funny Sounds Q&A

  • Why is my toilet making funny sounds ?

Since the tank is so full, there is no room for the tank to vent properly, or “breathe”. When the additional rush of water from the flush enters the system, it needs to change places with some of air in the septic tank, and if the vent is obstructed, the displaced air will vent back through the p-trap and into the toilet bowl, making the blurp or blooping sounds.

  • If my toilet is making funny sounds, who should I call ?

Call a septic tank pumping professional, also listed here at https://localsepticpros.net under the Septic Pumping category.

  • How long can I wait if my toilet is making funny sounds ?

Not too long at all. You may have already tried the plunger. Call quick before you need a towel or a mop !
