The Local Septic Pros Network:

How we got started

I run a Digital Services agency, so I thought it might be nice to trade some of my digital services for a septic service. I started building this website to help consumers with educational content and make it easier to find the Septic Services they need.

While doing market research, I realized that septic services are recession proof, frequently required in a real estate boom, and homeowners will always need to maintain their systems. There is an on-site septic system in about 25% of all the homes in America.

In the past 35 years, I have owned five homes on municipal sewer and two homes with rural septic systems. I did my first soil perc test when shopping for a building lot. The ground was incredible ! It had nice thick topsoil and sandy loam that would be no problem for a conventional septic system. Unfortunately, the deal for that parcel fell through, so we settled for another building lot closet to town that had an existing well, but would need an expensive septic system.

I managed the 3BR home construction project, which included an engineered raised bed (mound) system. That system was designed and installed for about $20,000 in 2006 in upstate New York. I wanted to save some money, so I asked how much of the work I could do myself, and they said all I could do was pay the bill and rake up the rocks and be sure to plant grass instead of sod over the drain field area. “Be sure the grass is growing within two weeks for the final inspection” the guy said. I could tell they were not joking, so I bough some good grass seed and a spreader and went to work. The building inspector paid a visit as scheduled to make sure the grass was growing as per the specs.

I was amazed that there were exact blueprints and a specifications for everything, from the grass covering for the topsoil and the type of bank run fill to bring in. I lived there a few years with no septic issues, but had to get the septic system pumped before I sold the home.

In my most recent move, I started looking for a rural property to build my next home, and in the process I met an interesting pro in my area, a Soil Scientist. Read more in the Blog…
